Our mission

Ollie's legacy lives on

At Ollie's Echo, we are dedicated to raising awareness and preventing eating disorders, particularly anorexia, in boys.

Founded in memory of Ollie Hughes, our charity seeks to empower young people and their families with the knowledge, support, and resources they need to navigate the complexities of eating disorders.

Our mission is to create a world where all boys can embrace their bodies and thrive in a supportive and understanding environment.

Advocating
for change

Tuesday, 9 January 2024, was the day that changed my life forever. My 14-year-old son and only child, Ollie, took his life at home after a short battle with anorexia.

In memory of Ollie, I established Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention, a charity dedicated to educating others about eating disorders, providing support for families, and advocating for early intervention and prevention strategies.

know?

Eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours in boys and men may present differently than in girls and women, particularly with muscularity-oriented disordered eating.

Recent research shows that three in five adolescent girls engage in disordered eating, and alarmingly, two in five adolescent boys are doing the same.

There were 1.1 million or 4.45% of Australians living with an ED in 2023, increasing by 21% since 2012.
In 2023, there were an estimated 1,273 deaths due to an ED in Australia.
the 1,273 ed-related deaths in 2023 was higher than the national road toll.

What we do

Education
and
Awareness

Ollie’s journey underscores the critical importance of education in preventing eating disorders. We believe that raising awareness is key to saving lives. Through workshops, seminars, and school programs, we aim to share Ollie’s story and highlight the signs, symptoms, and risks of eating disorders in boys.

These educational initiatives are designed to engage young people, parents, and educators in meaningful conversations about body image, self-esteem, and mental health. By fostering open dialogue and understanding, we hope to empower others to recognise the challenges faced by boys like Ollie and encourage proactive measures for prevention and support.
